Please comment on the following elements of the race:
#Response DatePlease provide comments for any elements ranked Adequate or below.
Jul 12, 2010 4:42 AMI have run a lot of ultras and the knee knacker is by far one of the best organized particularly for a 50 Km race.
Jul 12, 2010 5:04 AMUnfortunately I forgot to pick up my drop bag at finish line. Somehow I didn't notice them & forgot to go looking for it.
Jul 12, 2010 5:23 AMice at aid stations would have been awesome. The drinks would be better if colder.
Jul 12, 2010 5:32 AMMinor point, Please have more gluten free food at the aid stations, I think there are a number of people who could benefit.
Jul 12, 2010 5:35 AMMy drop bag didn't make it to the finish line.
Jul 12, 2010 5:42 AMThere was one point on the course where I either saw people go off course or heard of several fellow runners that went off course due to poor marking or lack of a marshall. This spot was just above Skyline Drive (fork in BP trail).
Jul 12, 2010 5:43 AMA little more coke please
Jul 12, 2010 5:48 AMNeeds more flagging during certain areas in the race especially in the 3/4 leg.
Jul 12, 2010 5:52 AMOrganisation on the course is impeccable - plentiful volunteers who are keen and know how to assist runners, very well marked trail and good aid station stocks
Jul 12, 2010 6:05 AMWe all know about the porta-potty mixup at the start. Arrrrggghhh. S@#t happens..
Jul 12, 2010 6:09 AMThe aid stations need better food. The sugar stuff is not adequate - the cups are too small - the coke runs out - more coke required throughout the day. Gels and electrolyte tablets are now the normal at ultra aid stations - the kk needs to respond with current practices at ultra races.
Jul 12, 2010 6:10 AMThe volunteers were great, but not all stations had "elite" or "Gatorade" and I really needed it on such a hot day.

Jul 12, 2010 3:07 PMMissed having music this year
Jul 12, 2010 3:16 PMI thought everything was great Im not a big fan of eload though
Jul 12, 2010 4:08 PMIf there could have been more potatoe/salt type food at other aid stations, that would have been great. I know it's one specific volunteer that makes them and it's a lot of work. Please let her know they probably saved my race for me!਀ I did also really appreciate the bananas, flat coke and other liquids at the stations!
Jul 12, 2010 4:22 PMIt would be great to have some power bars of sorts at the tables. The liquids were good but the cups were quite small and not filled all the way...it meant having to grab 3 or 4 on such a hot day which created confusion with volunteers who were trying to conserve cups.
Jul 12, 2010 4:52 PMi was thrilled with how easy it was to find the trail on race day. thanks for this.
Jul 12, 2010 5:17 PMDespite the effort to mark the trail, there were several spots where I took a wrong turn (as did others). Along the shoulder of Grouse is tricky, as is the Black Mountain section around the lakes.
Jul 12, 2010 5:49 PMCongratulations to all the volunteers for a job well done.
Jul 12, 2010 5:49 PMas mentioned previously, 1 marker i missed, otherwise course would have been excellent. Low snow and mud this year, better marshalling this year just past top of black mnt at the hard right turn on the boardwalks. It was so hot it would have been better to have more than water at certain aid stations. Water is better than nothing, but in a hot year I'll take the sports drink. Good thing about eload was that it was consistent whereever it was and I knew before hand so my bottles and bag were filled with same, so refills are consistent and not a mix of different types of sports drinks.
Jul 12, 2010 5:50 PMThe course is well marked only if you know the way already. For a new runner there were a few spots where they could get lost. The runner in front of me missed the left turn over the bridge from lynn headwaters up to the 3rd check point.
Jul 12, 2010 6:36 PMI ran off course twice, but after a few minutes of searching was able to relocate the trail
Jul 12, 2010 6:39 PMThere were a few places here and there that could have used a course marshall. Seems like there were less this year than last year? I know of two people who got lost this year and had to back track a bit. I almost did it myself a few times.
Jul 12, 2010 7:42 PMThe drop-bag process was efficient, but I forgot to collect it at the finish line because I was so tired. It would have been good to have some way of reminding people to pick it up afterwards. The aid stations were generally incredible, although the spacing could be slightly more consistent. Some were 1.5hrs apart, others only 20 minutes. The liquids available were good, although the Coke should have been flat. And the marking was also good and I'm hugely appreciative of the people that go out beforehand to put up the markers, although there didn't seem to be as many of them this year compared to last. I even got lost for a few moments and had to backtrack once.
Jul 12, 2010 8:21 PMaid at the lilloet rd aid station could have included e-load because of the heat, not just water though i relaize hyannis is not much further... I needed it... :)
Jul 12, 2010 9:36 PMpoor against food at aid station question really applies to lack of sport/energy gels. provided food might have been tasty (i didn't have time to try any) but was not great for fast input of energy with minimum metabolism required. for long events as KK energy gels are a must! typically runners need a gel every 20/30minutes, hence number of gels on each station should be estimated based on the simple formula of number of runner times average time between station divided by 20 minutes.
Jul 12, 2010 11:54 PMRan out of coke at some stations and the water was warm. I have been a volunteer and an aid station captain and I am not sure how with the tempature you could have cold water but it is worth a thought. I filled only one bottle at the top of cypress with aid station water and it was very warm. I had my friends have ice cold water for me at the other stops. Not sure I could have made it with warm water.
Jul 13, 2010 12:11 AMEverything superb, we were well looked after in every regard.
Jul 13, 2010 1:28 AMi am very familiar with the BP trail but did notice that markings were likely taken down in the 3rd 1/4 section - not an issue with me but perhaps with others not so familiar
Jul 13, 2010 1:51 AMUnfortunately I could not race due to injury
Jul 13, 2010 1:57 AMThere were a couple of places I expected to see marshals but didn't:਀ⴀ 伀渀攀 眀愀猀 琀栀攀 氀攀昀琀 琀甀爀渀 漀昀昀 漀昀 圀攀氀氀猀 䜀爀愀礀 樀甀猀琀 戀攀昀漀爀攀 琀栀攀 䠀漀氀氀礀戀甀爀渀 愀椀搀 猀琀愀琀椀漀渀 - Darn! Can't remember the other spot.
Jul 13, 2010 3:43 AMAt one point I veered of the trail for some reason or another. Managed to find my way back to the trail, but not sure where I missed the marker.
Jul 13, 2010 4:26 AMMy only suggestion is to have portable toilets at the major aid stations - its fine to go while out on the trail, but would be much better to have a portable toilet when needed.
Jul 13, 2010 4:27 AMall was great.
Jul 13, 2010 4:11 PMcould have had more gatorade/electrolyte drink since it was so hot!
Jul 13, 2010 6:41 PMWould like more variety of fluids at the aid stations.
Jul 13, 2010 7:02 PMThis part of the run is very well done.
Jul 14, 2010 4:55 AMI knew they were there but I didn't count the course marshalls. It was great having ice and iced coke was a godsend.
Jul 14, 2010 6:36 PMI think the food at the aid stations was good for the people who were there early enough to get it.
Jul 14, 2010 8:03 PMLiquids: the stations that had little signage indicating "water" or "poweraid/gatorate" were more helpful. I ran with a group, so the stations were more crowded when I arrived and volunteer not always available to tell me which liquid was what. I recommend they continue to label liquids on the tables, that worked well
Jul 14, 2010 9:20 PMYou do a great job for a race with such a distance and elevation.
Jul 14, 2010 9:51 PMMy drop bag was not at Dam. Because they had given me wrong number at packet pick up....and later the number was "sharpie" crossed out....they must have taken it away because they did not realize the race director had changed my number.
Jul 15, 2010 9:24 PMA very well run and organized race. My only suggestion for improvement would be more porta potties at the start.
Jul 15, 2010 11:32 PMThere were portions of trail that were not marked well.. specifically the trail between Grouse Mtn and the next aid station
Jul 16, 2010 12:01 AMoutstanding race from every aspect...just wish the total field numbers could be opened up to 300 or more as the lottery is really a crap shoot to get in each year.
Jul 16, 2010 3:21 AMthe aid stations were excellent but it would have been good to have more information of what they would serve a lot earlier in the training season. I prefer to be familiar with what I eat and preferably train with the same nutrition.
Jul 16, 2010 5:20 AMit would have been nice to have a water station at the top of Nancy Greene Way
Jul 18, 2010 9:47 PMI heard a few complaints about the lack of gels on the course. I had a crew so this wasn't an issue for me, but I know it was for some.
Aug 9, 2010 5:40 PMThe food at the aid stations was excellent, I only had one complaint but for my wife's and my race nutrition it was important. We had trained using roast potatoes as an ultra food. The potatoes were roasted with olive oil and sprinkled with salt. The were good to eat because they held together. The potatoes on the course had all been boiled, most way too much so when we went to take some we found they had pretty much turned to a pile of mash, difficult to pick up and not very appetizing. The most delicious thing on the course was the chunks of watermelon in the second half of the race, very refreshing!!!
