For Immediate Release — 2012 race summary
The 24th running of the Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run (“the Knee Knacker”) took place on Saturday, July 14, 2012, with clear skies and warm weather shining down on the course at the 6:00am start. Course conditions were warm and humid throughout the race, providing an additional challenge along the 30-mile trail run through the North Shore mountains. With over 16,000 ft elevation change, the Knee Knacker is known as the “knarliest” in Canada and one of the most difficult ultra-marathons of this distance in North America.
The men’s field was dominated by first-time runners this year, with the winner, Nathan Barrett of Vancouver, BC, pushing to a five-minute lead at the first quarter and widening it to 22 minutes by the end at Panorama Park. Continue reading

West Vancouver, British Columbia – The Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run is at hand once again, bringing together a field of some of the world’s top ultra-marathoners to run 30 miles on the trails of West and North Vancouver. The twenty-fourth edition of the Knee Knacker takes place on Saturday, July 14, 2012, starting at Horseshoe Bay and ending at Panorama Park in Deep Cove.
This year’s race will have a new men’s winner, as the top three 2011 finishers are not returning to challenge for the title. Some of the potential leaders are seven-time winner and former course record holder Peter Findlay of Kamloops, Phil Villeneuve of Canmore, Alberta, and a pair of previous fourth-place finishers, Ryan Ervin (2011) of North Vancouver and Gary Robbins (2010) of North Vancouver. In the women’s field, the 2011 second-place finisher, Lisa Polizzi of Vancouver, is back, and she’ll be facing strong competition from Brooke Spence of North Vancouver and the 2009 Western States 100 winner, Anita Ortiz of Eagle, Colorado. In total, over 350 entrants applied to the March lottery to attain one of the coveted 200 spots at the starting line. Continue reading

Course conditions were generally excellent, but the remaining snowpack on the peaks of the North Shore mountains provided an additional challenge along the 30-mile trail and demonstrated why the race is known as the “knarliest” in Canada and one of the most difficult ultra-marathons in North America. West Vancouver, British Columbia – Saturday, July 10th marked the twenty-second annual running of the Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run (a.k.a. “Knee Knacker”). Good weather greeted the runners and volunteers on this occasion with clear skies in the morning and warm temperatures throughout the day. Course conditions were excellent, with minimal snow in the high country and limited patches of mud, however the 26C heat and high humidity were likely a factor. Continue reading
