Cleveland Dam to Deep Cove, 25km

Hi to all you hard training ultra runners!

Well Sunday June 3rd not only brought us our first dreaded car pooling training run for the year, but also some very warm weather.  I must admit that because of the warm weather, I was fairly anxious to get over to Cleveland Dam and start our run.  Even at 8:15 am you could tell it was going to be a warm one.  I did notice that there were a few people who had one small water bottle and one individual who had no water ... not sure if they even had any nutrients for the long run.  Just a reminder that we are not out there to teach our body a lesson.  Like a vehicle, our bodies need the proper fuel in order to operate properly.  This means water and some type of electrolyte drink to replace any nutrients lost and to re-hydrate and replenish our bodies.  Gels, energy bars and the such give us the carbs to keep up our energy. Train safe and smart!

Ok ... that's my rant for the day.  For the most part, everyone seemed keen about the long run.  I hope that most people took advantage of the water stops at Mountain Hwy, Lynn Headwaters and the LSCR.  Starting from the back of the pack the 45 or so runners seemed to spread out fairly fast.  As I made my way along the Baden Powell trail, passing runners, everyone seemed to be enjoying the run.  It definitely got warmer and slightly humid.  It's funny how, as the field spreads out, you seem to be running alone for most of the time.  I hope that not too many people got off track and that the BP signs were evident enough to get through to Deep Cove.

As I came into Panorama Park, I could see maybe 12-15 runners all standing in the ocean cooling off their feet and legs -- quite a funny sight but definitely helps the tired legs.  Next week's run is a tough and challenging run ... Grouse to Old Buck and back.  Don't forget to bring your gels and fluids!  Hope everyone's run was a successful one and we will see you next week.

PS ... thanks Monty for helping with the training group this week!
