MELANIE MATTHEWS

The Simon Fraser University and Team Canada softball player was named top batter of the Canada Cup softball tournament, which ended Sunday. Matthews, a 19-year-old outfielder, hit .511 with 13 RBI and four home runs, including a solo shot in the gold-medal game, a 6-4 loss to Australia. The Surrey resident and Earl Marriot Secondary School graduate will represent Canada at the world championships in Beijing in late August.

MARK BATES

On June 30, the North Vancouver resident became just the fourth person inducted into Triathlon Canada's Hall of Fame. Bates, who on Saturday won the Knee Knacker 50-km trail race for the second year in a row, has won more than 50 titles in his 14-year career, including six national championships. He finished fourth at the worlds in Wellington, N.Z., in 1994 and won silver at the 1995 Pan-American Games.
