Hello fellow trail runners!  Planning is well underway for the 18th Annual Knee Knacker and the excitement is starting to build.  Communication will increase over the next 2 ½ months as race day approaches.  I’ve dubbed 2006 as “The Year of Adapting to Change”.  It’s not as catchy as last year’s “The Year of the Mud”, but we’ll go with it for now!

Eagle Ridge Construction

As many of you are probably aware, the Knee Knacker start is located in the midst of the planned highway construction.  Thank you to those who have been in touch to voice your questions & concerns.  The Knee Knacker committee has decided that as an organization, we won't take a political stand.  We encourage you as Knee Knacker participants and volunteers to be informed & find out more about the issues, but we recognize that we can't speak for everyone involved in the Knee Knacker and that individual opinions will vary.  There are a number of sites to get more info including the Coalition to Save Eagle Ridge Bluffs and the Ministry sites.

First Quarter Changes - New Start & Changes at Cypress

Which leads us to information on the course changes this year  We have a stellar alternative for the race start, and huge thanks go to Rod Hatfull for scoping out the trail and the District of West Van, particularly Bill, Larry, Kevin, Doug & Lara for granting us permission to make it happen.

The trail is a beautiful, technical, mostly single track route through the forest.  It starts off of Westport Road (exit #4, Upper Levels Highway) on the Trans Canada trail, follows Nelson Creek and then Whyte Creek and joins the Baden-Powell Trail shortly before the picnic table.  A description is posted at www.kneeknacker.com/RaceInfo/2006/StartDescription.htm, and we will be holding an orientation run on May 13th for anyone who is interested.  Please respect this trail - we are really fortunate to have been granted permission.  As you will see, it’s a hidden gem and true to the “Knee Knacker experience”.

The second course change this year will be on the descent to Cypress.  We will follow the newly routed Baden-Powell trail instead of going down the current access road.  This is apparently mostly single track & steeper, so once the snow clears we’ll get out & check it out further.

If anyone has a GPS or wants to map either of these out for us, please be in touch.  Thanks!

Training Runs

Training runs will start this weekend, April 30th & everyone is welcome.  Glenn Pace & Craig Moore will co-ordinate these & will be looking for volunteers to help lead.  Check out http://www.kneeknacker.com/RaceInfo/2006/TrainingRuns.htm for more info.

Trail Work Party – May 27th

Are you ready, willing & able to give something back to the trails we all love?  Our Trail Maintenance Day will be on May 27th & we need enthusiastic people to come out & participate.  No previous experience necessary.  To volunteer, please be in touch via the feedback form at http://www.kneeknacker.com/feedback.htm.  We’ll send out additional details as the date gets closer.

Volunteers

We’ve had really good response so far to our call for volunteers – thank you for this.  We still have some key positions though, so please be in touch via http://www.kneeknacker.com/feedback.htm if you, your friends or family could help with any of the following:

bullet Aid station captains
bullet Transportation crew
bullet Marshals
bullet Photographers
bullet Timers
bullet Sweepers.

Communications

We enjoy hearing how things are going & always appreciate suggestions or comments.  Please don’t hesitate to contact any one of the KKNSTR 2006 committee members.  http://www.kneeknacker.com/RaceInfo/2006/contacts.htm

See you on the trails,
