Grouse Mountain to Lynn Return, 20 Km

We had a very good turnout of people and exceptional weather on Sunday. About 36 or so headed out to experience a lot of rain and also very sloppy conditions on the trail. I haven’t seen it quite that muddy for a long time on the BP. This was of course the Vancouver Marathon weekend so they got to have almost as much fun as we did.

Considering the conditions it was nice to see everyone get out there and have some fun … or was that just anxious impatience that converted itself into early training energy?

There were only a couple of people unfamiliar with the trail this time around and they promised to stick with more experienced runners to find their way. However, even those that think they might know the way still ran astray, right Monty W.? Monty took a short cut with an immediate right turn off the pipeline bridge in Lynn Canyon and missed going up the hill before taking a right. On race day you won’t want to miss the uphill part or you’ll miss the ¾ aid station at the LSCR staging area.

And then there was Mark making his mark on the day with an extra trip to and from Lynn Canyon … or the other way around I’m not sure. Either way he was showing us how to chew up a muddy course with speed and great agility. I was going to have to trip him though if he passed me one more time ;)

Please note: next Sunday we have a change of plans. We’re starting in the same place and doing the run somewhat as planned. However, once we go up Old Grouse Mountain Highway we suggest that you just turn around and retrace your steps whenever you see fit, perhaps when you run into snow. There is likely too much snow still at the higher elevations to make the run enjoyable by going all the way up to the Skyride. You can try if you like but don’t sweat it. The run back down is a great workout and you can choose to take St. George’s trail for a shortcut if you wish (if you can find it). Be sure to dress warmly if it is miserable again because it will be cooler at the upper parts.

Lastly, please remember the Trail Work Party on Saturday, May 27th at 8:45 am. We’ll be taking care of the lower Seymour Grind once again. Details will be found on the Knee Knacker web site soon. Treats and coffee by Delany’s will be provided along with a chance for a good upper body workout.

See you again next Sunday at Grouse Mountain, 8:00 am.
