First Half, 24 Km

Congratulations to all the first timers that trekked up Black Mountain today. We had a total of about 25 people and there were a small handful making the trip for the first time to the top and down into Cleveland Dam. Everyone did very well I’m happy to say. However, if you found yourself coming in after 5 hours then be ready to pick up the pace a bit on race day in order to make the cut off.

And congratulations to our fearless training run leader, Glenn Pacé, for completing the ultra-hard and very long Western States 100 mile race this weekend in 27.5 hours. That is one tough run. We had 11 Canadians there this year and only 6 finished, including Glenn of course.

As for our ultra tough training run today, it wasn’t as long as last weekend’s first ¾’s but there remains nothing easy about Black and Hollyburn Mountains. Fortunately the weather was cool (but windy at the exposed spots) and the extensive mud wasn’t too wet. At this point I would say count on lots of thick mud for race day. I would also count on some blow downs getting in your way throughout the first half. And apparently the wire fence at the top of the ski runs will be out of the way on the big day but watch out just in case. There has been a lot of work on the gravel road there along with a new trail being put in place. On race day we will follow the usual route down the road and there will be marshals to guide you.

Next week we do the last ¼. Please meet in Deep Cove at 7:00 am and carpool to Lynn Canyon. I suggest you take this one nice and easy and enjoy all the hard work you’ve done to this point to be in shape for the Knee Knacker 2005. It’s been a lot of work and a lot of fun so be sure you are tapering now and energized for July 9.

See you next Sunday,
