Cypress Top Lookout to Deep Cove, 33 Km
Wow! I felt good today, how about you? Are all those aches and pains getting to you or are you getting enough exercise and rest to enjoy the Sunday runs? As I pointed out to the group of about 55 people today, rest is a crucial part of our training. The ‘exercise during the week’ part is there to keep you strong and toned and give you yet another reason to get on to the trails (and to stretch of course). It’s all very important so keep everything in perspective as part of your weekly routine. We met up in Deep Cove and carpooled to the Cypress Top Lookout for what is mostly a nice long downhill run into the Cove. The weather was almost too good … cool, about 12 C to maybe 16 C, overcast, no rain though. Just for fun the trails were a bit wet, especially along the Skyline Trail where we began our run on Cypress. The trail was quite overgrown under the power line mind you and the salmonberry bushes were still busy with berries … didn’t see any bears around though. Most people stayed in nice groups today for safety and to stay on course. Many of us also enjoyed a meal at Honey Doughnuts when all was said and done about 4 to 5 hours later. Now for next week’s preview … the big Black Mountain! If you haven’t figured it out by now, Black Mountain is very big and we’re going to include it in The First ¾’s training run on June 19. It will take the average runner on race day almost 2 hours to get to the top of Black Mtn. and start heading down the other side into the first aid station at Cypress Bowl. And that is a big climb up to about 4000 feet from less than 400 feet at the start line in Horseshoe Bay at the Eagleridge Parking lot. If you’re not being dropped off at the start next Sunday, please meet for this run at the entrance to Lynn Canyon Park, right by the gate, at 7:00 am. We can likely park on the large lot at the entrance and begin our carpool as quickly as possible. Things seem to be working out well with the carpooling so please keep up your patient efforts with this. You need to be extra careful and make plans to run with someone that knows the route. This is not a section to be left alone on if you aren’t very confident about where to go. It is remote and the route-finding is tricky. It’s loads o’ fun but a big challenge the first time you go up there. And if the weather is inclement take an extra layer or two with gloves and a hat for sure. This is a 4 to 7 hour run by the way so of course be prepared with food and water too. I hope things are going well for you and you’re enjoying the runs,
Craig Moore
